Atlanta Montessori Teacher Education began in 1980. The training program has been ongoing in Atlanta for 25 years. The AMTE Teacher Training Site is located at 6011 Western Hills, Norcross, Georgia 30071.

The training center classroom is air-conditioned and equipped with the full range of Montessori apparatus to give the student opportunity for individualized practice. A resource library is available for the students' use. There is a copier, laminator and book binder for material making.

AMTE has Practicum Sites at Covered Bridge Montessori School, Covered Bridge Academy, and Country Brook Montessori School, all of which are affiliated with AMS. Covered Bridge Montessori School is located at 3941 Covered Bridge Place, Smyrna, Georgia, 30082. There are 7 classrooms at this location: 2 Toddler and 5 Early Childhood classrooms. Covered Bridge Academy has 4 classrooms: 2 Lower Elementary (6-9 yrs.) and 2 Early Childhood classes. Country Brook Montessori School is located at 2175 N. Norcross Tucker Road, Norcross, GA 30071. There are 5 classrooms: 3 Early Childhood classes, and 1 Lower Elementary and 1 Toddler (2 yrs.). Other approved practicum sites are located throughout the 7 county metropolitan area.

AMTE is authorized and licensed with the Georgia Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission and holds accredited status from MACTE (Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education) for its Early Childhood Teacher Education Course (2009) and Elementary I Course (2008).

AMTE is applying for accreditation ofthe Infant/Toddler Course in 2006-07. Teacher Certification is granted through AMS.

AMTE is an American Montessori Society Teacher Education Affiliate.

Barbara Moffitt received her B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri, and has done graduate work at West Texas University, Canyon, Texas, completing her certification in Language Learning Disabilities. She completed her Montessori Early Childhood Training in 1970 with IAPM in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her experience includes 5 years public school teaching and 36 years in Montessori work. She has attended the NCME Elementary Training for 6 - 9 year olds in San Diego, CA, and 6-9 training at Whitby School in CT. She has done Montessori training and consulting work for the past 34 years. She completed 42 hours of Adult Education from the University of Georgia Continuing Education Department sponsored by ACET (Advancing Careers through Education and Training).

She is the author of Food Fun a Nutrition Guide for the Montessori School and I Can Do It Myself a series of progress reports for the child in a Montessori School. She served as the past Editor of the Reporter, NCME's National Magazine. She holds professional membership with AMS, NCCA, GCCA and MEG. She served as a member of the NCME board since its beginning and served as the Executive Director for the National Center for Montessori Education for 5 years. Barbara has served as Vice President of MACTE (Montessori Accreditation Council of Teacher Education). In 1996, Barbara was nominated to Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Prior to moving to Atlanta, she was Director of the Amarillo Montessori Academy, Amarillo, Texas, for eight years. She is married to Leroy Moffitt, who is partner in their business, Moffitt Educational Enterprises, Inc. Mr. and Mrs. Moffitt own and operate 3 Montessori schools, Covered Bridge Montessori School and Covered Bridge Academy in Smyrna and Country Brook Montessori School in Norcross.

A faculty of 16 experienced Montessori Instructors make up the AMTE Training Team.
